Doomsday Vault
Did you know that Norway has a 'Doomsday Vault' in the side of a mountain on a remote mountain? In this vault contains seeds of all kinds so that if there is a disaster the seeds can be recovered and grown. It is so cold up there that it is likely that everything could last for centuries.

I read that in the news yesterday. It's a great idea, and ensures survival of food sources - if the surviving people can access the vault!
Rather off topic, but... I've also heard the rumor on the 'net that so-called "heirloom" or "heritage" seeds will be in short supply, and that people should stock up. "Heritage" seeds are from plants that reproduce after their own kind. "Hybrid" and "GM" seeds are genetically modified and are patented - the chemical companies who engineered them "own" them and you can only get the seeds by paying for them through their makers. |

Do you think, perhaps, it's a wise idea to have our own supply? If Norway believes that it's necessary to have a cache in the event of a world-wide crisis, all of us should take it seriously. This is not one of those "if" things, but "when."
