It is a nice idea to have bots dieing rather then humans but I ponder if the detached feeling from the action it is in will increase war crimes in that it might be easier to kill someone who is surrendering or civilians.

If we develop robots that can kill humans then are we just bringing about judgement day as in the terminator movies? I can see using them on other creatures but no humans.

That is a tough one as many would feel better seeing robots die instead of humans. I think though the trick is not to fully automate but to have humans at the control. Keep robots as dummies not thinking and making judgment calls. Though I know every inch you give leads to the next foot taken in any cause.

An interesting read. Many good points on both sides. I think one commenter summed it up very well by comparing them to land mines. Mines are a horrendous weapon, removing the need for a decision to kill and costing many civilian casualties.
Current image processing technology is not good enough to allow for this. The way remote controlled robots currently work is probably the best option. It takes a person to make the decision, and it also alleviates the problems of being in combat that the article mentions, panic, fear, etc. This is the technology that should be invested in, if any. Something more precise than the current generation of drones.
