Combat Warfare: Swamp
Based on your experiences what for you was the tactical Combat Warfare: Swamp's rating, pros and cons environment advantages and disadvantages against the enemy?
Being in a swamp is hard enough at times due to the water, bugs and many possible hazards that can slow an advance down if not stop it totally. IF you are advancing into a swamp you have to think that the enemy is on the high dry ground and well entrenched. They would also use the bogs and other natural barriers to funnel you where they want you so they can do away with the invading army.
Yes, swamps are definitely one of the most difficult terrains to attack in and very favorable for defense. A mechanized force is at a huge disadvantage in a swamp. Vehicles get bogged down, excuse the pun, and become easy targets for artillery and anti-tank weapons. The best way to treat a swamp is to leave a defensive screening force on its outskirts and bypass it if possible. As KN said, a defender will already have the high ground and dry points fortified to some degree. They will also have the avenues of approached targeted and probably mined. Most importantly, they'll have all the best movement routes identified so they can counterattack easily when required and retreat when it's called for. These are all things the attacker probably doesn't know since maps can't show this because swamplands change constantly.
On the offense, if you can't bypass the swamp, the way to attack is with a light infantry force supported by artillery and air support. Be prepared to have your artillery use air burst rounds as the soft ground in a swamp can prevent an artillery round from exploding. Without air superiority attacking a swamp would be pure suicide. When I say swamp in this case I'm talking about a large swamp, I'm talking about very large swamps like the Pripyet Marshes, Great Swamp, Everglades, and much of coastal Louisiana. Many of these might even have to be handles like a mixture of river crossing, swamp, and even invasion.
