Based on your experiences what for you was the tactical Combat Warfare: Underground's environment advantages and disadvantages against the enemy?

I had a uncle who was a tunnel rat in Vietnam. The stories he told me makes me not want to fight any underground warfare. First of all you are at a serious disadvantage due to not being able to see. IF you have a light you are at even more of a disadvantage as the enemy will see you long before you see them. If both of you stay in the dark there is a very good possibility you pass right next to each other not even knowing the other is there. This does not sound like a good time.

So, underground operations have changed significantly for us. By us I mean the US. We have some of the greatest optics in the world and we practice using them. Our optics can gather in any ambient light, magnify it, and then use that to spot people. If there is zero light, as is probably the case underground, you can flip a switch and it goes to thermal mode. In this mode, you can "See" your opponent through their heat signature. SF operators train using these vision systems and in this environment fairly regularly and we are at a decided advantage because of it, whether on offense or defense.

The thing that the defense has, even if the defense isn't us, is that they have probably laid boob traps. Booby traps are exceedingly difficult to identify in this environment due to the fact they take on the same temperature as their surrounding, so our thermal imaging doesn't help. That means you have to move exceedingly slowly in this environment.
