On the weekend I was watching a show on Spanish war tactics and it discussed the issues that arose when they faced the Apache. Most battles they had faced were traditional to lines facing off, but the Apache were hunters of the buffalo and were used to riding around the herd and firing into to it. When the Apache did this in battle with the Spanish it created confusion and was very successful. The apache success was due to the in ability of the Spanish to fend off the arrows. They hard armour but the bulky shields were to slow to manipulate thus allowing the high accuracy of the Apache bows to find the weak links giving them victory.

That lasted until the Spaniards introduced cannons and their numbers increased with each ship from Europe. The natives, unfortunately did not upgrade their weaponry and could not mass enough support to fend off the attacks. When they surrendered they were slaughtered or enslaved. The conquistadors had more success in central and south America than they did up north.
