Giovanni Caputo's Mirror Experiment

Do you think that Giovanni Caputo's Mirror Experiment proves that people see what they want to see when looking into a mirror of themselves for an extended period of time?

I looked it up as I did not know what it is, and I'm not sure it is that they saw what they wanted to see, but rather a warping of how their brain was determining what they saw.

The participants would have to sit in a dimly lit room, with a lamp with a 25w bulb behind them, and stare at themselves for ten minutes in the mirror. It reminded me of the game we played as children, where we looked into the mirror in a dark bathroom and repeated "Bloody Mary" over and over. The extreme success of the experiment suggests that this a phenomenon that the brain induces after a while.

On an interesting note, there are many people who have claimed to see things in mirrors after staring into them for a while. I think the brain will begin to hallucinate after a time, perhaps out of boredom. The site that I looked at explaining this had many people in the comments who also successfully repeated the experiment.

(I must make a mental note to never stare at myself in a mirror in a dim room for a while. I don't think this is something I want to experience).

I'm with you on this one, I don't think I'll be trying this. I'd rather not experience it. More, if one dies experience it does it affect future times one looks at a mirror? I'd just as soon not know the answer.

From what I've read on it I don't think so, except maybe unless it causes extreme paranoia. It sounds like it tricks your brain into thinking the image you see is changing. However, if I personally saw my image in the mirror change I would become paranoid of mirrors.

I know there are methods of divination that require staring in a mirror for extended periods of time, and it seems like this would be a good explanation for how they might perceive something in the mirror. It seems to me like the paranormal experiences people have can often be explained through psychological phenomenon, but some might disagree with me.
