The guards look at you "Castle? Nay mi lady this be but a simple stronghold. A caste is much bigger and grander. I will escort you inside to the dining hall that is be where the lord was last seen." He will tell you to follow him and he will lead you inside the stronghold itself and to the main keep. Once in the main keep he takes you to a room where a short man that looks a lot like a Klingon is sitting talking to a lady who is tall and slender with pointed ears. She is wearing a few weapons upon her body. He is wearing just a robe that you can tell.
My apologizes, sir; 'tis a grand stronghold (Said in Renfaire style to try and calm my nerves a bit). I thank him for being so kind and follow him to the main keep and to the room where I see a man wearing what looks like a robe and a lady that looks similar to the elves in "Lord of the Rings" but she seems ready for combat instead of the robes they wore in that movie. I glance around the room briefly…
"Actually I have seen that handle on old posts and threads, but the account it was attached to was removed, so there were no details. That answers one major question I had about being here - whether we are originals or copies made for this mysterious purpose. "
"We can get into the practical applications once we have leisure time, I guess, but the use of magic in mechanical and physical science could make some amazing things."
Going back to practicing with the weapons, I lean towards the use of shortswords & longswords, both with and without a small shield, sometimes dual wielding.
"So what exactly does the Lord have us do around here, to pay our keep for the Keep? Clear out goblins?"
I eye the table laden with food, and my stomach growls. I think to myself, when did I eat last? Should I wait to be introduced, or introduce myself to the man and the lady in the room and then help myself to the food, I didn't wish to be rude and just help myself, I do remember proper edict.
The guard walks you towards the man in the robes. "Lord Douglas this is a newcomer to this world like the others based on her style of dress. I thought you would like to meet with her."
The lord looks at you (Vickie) and says "Welcome to your new home. Let me guess you play Dungeons & Dragons ? This seems a common theme with those who end up here. Go grab some food if you wish and ask question if you have any."
The guard heads back to his post.
My face falls a bit at Grant's query, "In essence yes. Our job description is to scout and secure the lands around the fortress."
"Our first day out there, we found a band of goblins roasting a halfling child, backtracked their trail to the child's family, who unfortunately didn't survive either, then to a cave where even more of the bastards were holed up. Douglas didn't need to urge us much to take care of the problem at that point."
"When we got in there, it was hellish. Its one thing to read and write about the cruelty of certain creatures, quite another to experience it. We found a large number of Elvish children chained up inside. They were being hacked apart and eaten bit by bit. Thalica here was one of the survivors."
"I don't mean to be depressing, I just think you need to know from the start that for all the beauty and wonder this place holds, there is incredible darkness as well."
Out of Character: I'm gonna be wishing I'd held off on orientation for a bit, given that I'm probably going to end up repeating most of this for our other new player .

"Oh, I've never been of the illusion that a fantasy world would be all grade-school black and white and clean. While not squeamish in any way, injustice of any kind still strikes a nerve, with me. I'd be happy to finally be able to identify evil and confront it directly, unlike the kinds of evil we have back home. The only advantage I've ever seen of living in a Dungeons & Dragons setting is being more proactive in dealing with the bad guys and their ugliness"
Out of Character: : You could always just say "Please see previous posts" and cop out! .
