I shake my head " That's something that is much needed. I've ridden horses before but never around dire wolves. At least Ghost is understanding. We need to get them used to each other before our grand trek into the wilderness. This will be similar to Lewis and Clark. " I grin excitedly.
"Just probably with a few more man eating monsters than those two had to deal with."
"I suspect that speed will be among our greatest allies out there, at least until we get used to this world. That is why I wanted to start working with the horses early."
I keep working with the large horse until a halt is called, then I retire to our chambers to begin the process of scribing a scroll I think we will need.
Over the next few days Den and his friends keep up the training. I up the intensity slightly every day. I add some things in to the confidence portion of the training. I build a lean to out of deadwood and old vines. While picking the fallen sticks up I know I'm making the forest healthier and I can almost feel the forest thanking me. The feeling is more than just pleasant. "I wonder if this is how our eldest relatives who lived in harmony with nature felt" I think to myself.
The first few days we help each other climbing the lean to… this promotes teamwork and builds trust. Then we climb it independently. Each night I come out and alter things slightly, and each night I change the lean to until one day it is a vertical wall of sticks and vines. I'm impressed with the progress Jason and Rachel are making. "You two would have done fine in the military" I say to them. "You were born to work as a team, and that is the most important single aspect of the military."
As we add things in I ask Rachel to try to get in touch with her magical side and see if she can cast while clinging to a rope, or at the top of the lean to. At first that goes poorly, but she eventually gets the hang of it, although with the occasional flub as the somatic requirements are difficult while clinging for your life. We add some archery practice and some practice with sword, and staff. I show them the rudiments of fighting with a knife. Luckily, the bayonet training I received as a young private relates a bit to wielding a sword and we learn that too.
We also work on stealth and movement in the forest and across the open land. They learn the hand and arm signals I taught them and we get to the point where we can anticipate what each other wants or what we are going to do. I'm so proud of the progress they've made in such a short time. I'm not that good of a teacher so I assume at least part of it is where we are and what brought us here is helping me and helping Rachel and Jason; in other words, helping us adjust rather quickly.
In the afternoons we work on riding. We learn to ride in formation and in a formation that keeps us spread out enough to not all three be hit by magical effects or the random rock hurled by a hill giant. I shake my head as I think about that. "That sure ain't something they teach you in special forces training." We learn to wield our respective abilities while riding. We learn to wield our respective powers in support of each other. Then one day it hits me, "We are a team."

I push through the challenges that Den sets before us every day. My muscles burn in pain each night. After a time I feel myself getting stronger and able to run longer. I notice that I have tanned a little darker. " Tan lines. " I laugh at worrying about that when we have so much more to worry about.
In the midst of this training I go and purchase a padded shirt and pants to go under my armor. I also buy a club and wooden shield to stay true to my new calling. I work out casting spells and cast them under different conditions. Though I cry myself to sleep many times missing home and all that entails I have never felt more alive. Ghost and Eclipse now get along very well. All of our training has me feeling truly prepared to embark.

As usual when stressing out about something I cannot do anything about, I bury myself in work. I greatly miss the games I would play as well, roleplaying and otherwise, but the experiences here help make up for them.
I find the exercises considerably more engaging than anticipated, and the physical demands easier to adapt to. The programmed training must have included some basics along these lines. I have to wonder just how much of a difference was made. I didn't feel any different arriving here, but then with memory alteration in the works, I'd probably never know. Was Jason of Earth already dead in that respect?
I was putting the final touches on the fifth scroll I'd made in as many days when I suddenly realized, it has already been a week since we left Earth. Or perhaps only was a better word. It doesn't feel like it has been that long, partly because this place felt… comfortable.
As I go seeking dinner, I join the other two, "I think we're ready to see what this world has for us. Shall we ride out in the morning?"

After the week of training Jason and Rachel can add 1 point of skill to each of Climbing, Stealth and Use rope skills. This is from the added training that you have been doing.
By the end of the week the horses are getting more used to Ghost but he still feels a bit unhappy when Rachel is riding the horse instead of walking next to him.
Den will find that when he goes out to make adjustments through the end of the day that some of the guards are using it to work out and train too. They have been watching you three and doing some of the same work outs.
On the day we are set to depart I go to one of the sergeants of the guards. "I saw you using what I set up. The ropes we need so I took them but they are easy enough for you to replace and I hope you do. There was a saying in the place I came from in the Army I was in and it went, train as you fight because you fight as you train. Drill your men hard and they will be proficient and when the need arises one of yours will fight like two of your enemy. More, they will learn to trust each other and camaraderie. There is nothing as important as caring about the soldier to your left and right, for then you fight twice as hard. Continue using it and when we return I'll set up a few other things for you and your men to use… If you desire that is."
I then look at Rachel and Jason, "Well, we're as ready as we'll ever be. Okay, maybe not ever be but we're ready enough. Shall we start?" Star takes two or three steps then I pull on the reins and turn Star so I am facing the two of them, "Here are two of my favorite quotes from Lord of the Ring and they seem somehow appropriate today. First is this one from Frodo quoting Bilbo, 'It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door,' he used to say. 'You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to.' So let us remember that and stay safe… I've become quite used to your company and rather fond of you two" I say with a smile. Then I continue, "The second is from Sam I believe, 'It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish.' So, shall we away good Lord and Lady?" I say as I bow in my saddle, turn my horse, and start out the gate.
