After Douglas leaves, I pound a fist on the table, "What in the bloody hell was he thinking! That was going well, and then he just had to squander that good will and trust."

I look to the others, "What the hell do I do with him? If he keeps this up, he'll be nearly as great a threat to our well being as the hobs."

I shake my head." He almost got Den and I killed before. He knows that Lord Douglas doesn't care for him. I appreciate him speaking up for me but this isn't 2017 America. If we displease the Lord there is nothing stopping him from killing us or exiling us. He shouldn't be allowed to speak to Lord Douglas anymore in private or public. I think we have to make sure that Lord Douglas knows how the rest of us feel. If Thomas persists then he will be exiled alone. It will be his own doing." I sigh softly.

I shake my head, pinching the bridge of my nose, eyes closed "That was… utterly stupid to do, then and there. Jason, Thomas has no tact or filters, and considering how Lord Douglas reacts to him, you need to leave him out of any meetings with officials from now until you feel he can restrain himself." Looking around to make sure no one is within earshot, I quietly continue, deliberately vague. "Regardless of 'idle' thoughts we may have, airing them in that kind of fashion could see us all banished at best and executed at worst. Even if we find proof of things, confronting in the heart of a stronghold is tantamount to suicide. Thomas doesn't seem to grasp that."
"We have no special status here, regardless of a slightly shared history with the current Lord. We are as new meat in a shark pool, if we don't prevent bleeding. Primitive, feudal societies have no tolerance for social justice warriors, and usually see them as anti-survival to the whole. There is nothing stopping one of the Lord's loyal staff from just deciding that Thomas poses a risk, and offing him, without consequence. If they can justify it to the Lord, it'll happen."

I sit there listening to all that is said, even a bit shocked at Jason language as he yells at Thomas. Even though I believed he needed it. I stand up and curtsy as the lord leaves the room. Upon hearing Jason question, I speak up; "Maybe it would be best to let him be on his own, let him see this world is not like Earth. Maybe his calling is elsewhere within the area. Maybe I could hire him for the Inn that way he is not around the lord and can use his skills in another way." I go silent to let that sink into everyone else in the room.

After a bit I will go on, "Also, what about the magic room in the NE tunnel? We have not been back there since the blast and smoke incident. There could be items in there we could use against the hobs. I am not saying what the lord has giving us to use it not welcome, but is there a cost to us using his men to provide cover for us? We are doing him a service and he will be providing us a service, but at what cost? If Thomas is the cost, maybe it is worth it in the long run and he will have a place in this world unless whatever God or Deity wishes otherwise. "

Kneading my forehead, I simply sit for a while, trying to calm down. "I suppose this is a bad time to ask if somebody else wants this job?"

"I know Grant, that's why I got so angry at him. I apologize for airing my temper by the way, I had to try to shut him up before he made things even worse, and I had to show that his opinions were not representative of ours."

"Vickie, if the lord has the right mindset, and I have little reason to think he does not, he is not doing us a service, but rather allocating additional resources to a project that needs it. If there is a cost, it lies in terms of him lowering his expectations of us a little. So long as we still go out and get the job done, that's a cost we can live with. The caveat to that is if his estimation of our capabilities drops too low, we may end up relegated to guard duty or even farm work. That is… unlikely to get us to our goal of finding a way home. But I do not think we are in danger of that, not given the work we have already done."

"If things progress well, sooner or later we will likely be capable of handling a challenge like the one with the hobgoblins without additional support. But that is not the case today, and letting him know that was the right thing to do. Even from a callous perspective, he loses out if we fail and fall."

"So, I guess I'll have a chat with Thomas, try to explain things, and ask him to stay the hell away from Lord Douglas for a good while. I would appreciate it if someone checked in with Be, see how she is doing, and if she has recovered anything else of use. What else can we get done today?"

"If we can, I would like to return to the tunnels tomorrow, we're running out of downtime to spend, and dislike the idea of leaving those prisoners in there regardless any longer than we must. That only gives me time to make one scroll however. What shall it be? The fireball seemed effective."

The Storyteller says...

Given Lord Douglas' exact words, and the fact that I was then escorted out, I did have the thought of whether or not he was giving me a choice in whether or not I think he values our lives and cares for our well being. This was a bit telling, yet I did not comment on it.

Still I left on my own accord, not letting the guards touch me as I kept my mouth shut. I will head to my room, still quite frustrated as I consider what Lord Douglas had said. Especially since it appeared he found it justified to put aside the what he may have know as right and wrong in our world, even if we may find ourselves in a new world.

Just because we found ourselves somewhere else, and I land with very different beliefs or morals that our own, does not make things right or justified. Still, I'll wait to see if Jason or someone else stops by to talk.

I will seek out Thomas next. When I find him, I'll shut the door behind me firmly.

"I am not going to apologize for yelling at you. Instead, I am going to explain why I meant every single word."

"I am not going to pretend the incident with Rachel didn't happen. But this world does not work at all like ours. You just put everyone's lives in jeopardy with those comments. Whats more, this is the third time you have done so."

"There were only two possible outcomes of confronting Douglas like that. Either your accusation is true, in which case the best case scenario involves you being summarily executed but the rest of us avoiding that fate. Or your accusation is false, in which case you've just insulted the only ally that really matters right now to no point."

"Congratulations, you made it to the second option. You have lost the trust of the local lord, and damaged the reputation we have managed to build with the same. Fortunately for you, he is not the sort of man you accused him of being. Now all you have to worry about is the possibility that one of Douglas' people might choose to kill you over the slight. They might even get away with it, if they can justify their actions. That is how different the justice system in a feudal society is from what we're used to."

I put down two of the pieces I've been working on, they aren't finished looking rather round and having nothing more than a fin on top to start with, but I can tell that they'll make nice Knight's when they're finished. Tomorrow I'll ask for some coal from the fire when we go down to breakfast.
