Upon hearing of Jason's statement regarding our next days tasks, I say "If we will be just travelling out in the open, I guess I should start developing a relationship with a regular steed, rather than pot-lucking whatever I'm handed. Some war training is in order, also. Mapping is something I can help with, as well as orienteering if I can align something with this planet's magnetic field properly. Time to test out a compass."
After the conversation, I head to the smithy and ask the gentleman there about lodestone or raw iron bits he might have to spare. If lodestone isn't identified or available, I take the iron, shape it into a taped rhombus and spend an hour or two passing it repeatedly through an electric field generated by the Lyden jars I have created, until a strong enough magnetic moment is created. Taking that "Needle" I paint one end with a bright colour and see if I can determine a steady magnetic direction from it by floating it in a small pool of oil on a wood splinter. As time allows after this, I will take some paper and square grid line it in an even pattern, using a marked rod for sizing and a thin-tipped charcoal stylus, to make a map base. I'll do this for about ten sheets of paper, then roll them up into a scroll tube, waxed to keep it dry inside. Add a few shaved charcoal sticks for drawing with and a small bag of sand for errors and I'll have my map kit.
Out of Character: I thought that each one of us got a stead that was our own, not some random horse from the sable pool. They are housed in the stables at this time, but I do believe each of us has our own horse. I am not trying to start anything, just trying to have clarification on this is all. I just just haven't come up with a good name for my stead and is why I say my horse instead of her name. I know others have already given their stead names. I hope this helps out.
Out of Character: Travis, I believe has his own horse, a mare named Sabrina already.
But, he would like to have his own alchemy laboratory.
In Character: Travis, spends his time making up 3 solutions. In his room. Which are:
(1) healing clw x1
(2) Invisibility x 2
After which he will spend some time, in the library, reading, writing in his journal herbal recipes.
When Grant starts asking around for lodestones, I grin and ask him to give me a bit as I retrieve something from the smithy. A little bit later, I hand him a bit of iron, with a fairly strong magnetic charge to it.
I'll let the others know that we'll be setting off as soon as people are ready to do so and to prepare accordingly. Its a big world out there, we need to get back to filling in that map so this settlement can thrive.
"Dennis, Rachel, Thomas, and I have covered enough ground in the immediate area that we'll need to start spending at least a few days out there at a time to explore efficiently, so make sure to pack what is needed."
Out of Character: Beat you to it Grant, though I'd gotten some magnesite and made a crude hand powered generator rather than leyden jars. Set one up with an induction coil, heat iron up to the Curie point, and semi permanent magnets can be made.
Have to be careful, without that heating process, a magnetic charge doesn't last long in iron. Past the Curie point temperature, the molecules are free enough to actually shift into magnetic alignment rather than just holding a charge.
Also, all of you have your own horse. They're being taken care of in the general stable, but they were purchased for your use. Names and training are definitely on the table, though you'll need to find time for the latter.
"Did you guys need a magnet?" I said pulling out my flashlight, "I bought this for work, during a blackout we had all the kids were using their cell phone lights to do prep-work while we waited for power. I got to so one with a telescoping neck and a magnetic base to stick to the shelf and use like a book light. I've been carrying it because it's got a powerful beam and hoped to disorient those dark-vision capable Gnolls, but I don't need the magnet for that."
Lwethiela looks at Jason and thinks for a bit. "I will ask some of the captains and others but I do not feel that many will go for this type of blood magic just to have a tiny messenger or scout. I hope that you understand this."
Lywenta just smiles at Jonathan. "I do this not because you are a stranger but because the lord has asked me to assist your group when I can and how I can. Helping with a few walls to speed up construction helps us all."
After breakfast, will spend some time around the stronghold and see how the Inn is coming along. I will do what I can to not think about what we saw.
"Well, we're here if you need us. Time to start scouting out there. I have no idea how much they've done, but I'll make sure we keep track. I have a thing for maps and will use my notes to create rudimentary copies and then embellish later. Maybe one day when it's done you can do a fly over and check our work."
