"First, as long as we have a map I don't need directions" I say with a smile as we move along the ridge line. "And second, what makes you think the guy at the gas station or the gnome tinker at the third oak on the left is going to know how to get to hobgoblin central any better than me?"
"Okay, all the advantage is with the denizens of this cave. We'll need torches or some form of light. They'll know we're coming if they care to post a guard. They also know the area. Be prepared for anything. Stay safe. I've grown used to your company" I say with just a hint of a smile. But those who know me see concern there too. "Shall we start our dungeon crawl."
I feel my blood pumping in excitement. " Yes, we must all be careful. What order shall we travel in? I wish we had some music to play in the background. I know it would hurt our stealth chances but it would make anything more exciting. You take the most exciting movie and remove the sound track and it loses a lot of excitement. Add a rocking soundtrack to any situation and it makes it exciting. " I laugh at this. " I guess this is the point that we roll spot and listen checks. Jason, you had the graph paper. Any dice on you? "
As we enter the opening my senses go on high alert. "Rachel, can you and Ghost take the lead? Stay as far over to the right as possible. I'll stay to the left to give me a lane to fire my bow. Jason, since you're taller can you fire over us with your crossbow? Let's get a torch lit. Once again, into the breach."
Out of Character: Thank you Rachel for reminding me I need to make some rolls.
I nod and step to the right. " Ghost, stay to this side. " I gesture to the right hand side of the passage. Working with flint and steel I have a torch blazing. " It's okay Ghost. I won't let this fire hurt you. " I grin at my friends. " Are y'all ready? This should be entertaining if nothing else. "
You light a torch and you head into the cave. Stooping down the get through the entry. You will have to continue to stoop down as the first 60 feet is only 5 feet in height. Ghost is even stooping as this is low for him. The floor is slanting down and the walls are rough.
Before entering the cave I joke a bit "No dice yet, but give me time. Hmm, come to think of it, we might be living an Role-playing Game, doesn't mean we have to stop playing. Care to play a Star Wars D20 campaign sometime? I think I remember enough of the rules to fake the rest."
In response to Dennis' deployment, "I'm not that much taller, especially with short targets in mind, I'll have to shoot between you and Ghost. Don't forget we have that Color Spray scroll. If something starts to swarm up in numbers, try to funnel them so I can catch many in a fifteen foot cone without hitting you."
"Well, this cave certainly is sized for goblins. Definitely not built with me in mind."
EDIT: dice rolls should read 'spot, listen', not that those rolls are going to help much.
