What is the damage estimated to be if it does hit earth? Would it be a large enough scale to cause another ice age? Or even wipe out a country or two, or would it be just a section of a small city that gets impacted?
Apocalypse or natural disaster?

Every so often I hear about these asteroids that are supposed to hit earth at such and such a date. I am seriously wondering if their is any truth at all to this. Or if this is just some ruse to raise the economy by convincing people the world is going to end.
Hazardous asteroid effects ranked from least to most destructive
If an asteroid struck Earth, which of its effects -- scorching heat, flying debris, towering tsunamis -- would claim the most lives? A new study has the answer: violent winds and shock waves are the most dangerous effects produced by Earth-impacting asteroids. Ref. Source 6d.
I think that we need to worry more about deflecting or destroying asteroids than mitigating damage. The small ones aren't that devastating but there is no mitigating the planet killers. We should work now on some technology to deal with this. It would be useful with the smaller ones as well.

We have the ability to blow them up too if we fire a concerted strike. I'm pretty sure if things were so dire that it meant extermination if we didn't launch the military would use anything and everything at their disposal.
