Medieval Ages Vs. Feudal Japan

Medieval Ages vs. Feudal Japan

Can the life and history of the Medieval Ages be compared as being just as colorful or more colorful as Feudal Japan?

Yes I believe so. In both cases you had peasants who did most of the labor while you had armies and heroes who went about making a kindom peaceful and posperous for its people. People were branching out to cover more real estate and working to make their names more reknown. In doing this, whether for good or ill, they were able to make history remember them.

Truth be told, I don't think life was very colorful for the average person in either time period. Most people would probably die in the same place they were born without ever having gone very far or having very many opportunities. Don't get me wrong, I love the history and the culture, but the life of the average person in both feudal Japan and medieval Europe consisted of little more than work.

Feudal Japan is interesting but it could never replace medieval Europe. The Europeans were far advanced in both culture and technology. The war lords in Japan sought only to make war and keep the people ignorant and loyal with a false sense of honor.

I think both sides had their good and bad.

Like Catherine said, the everyday person wasn't going to have a very colorful life. Both times were a time of change but the change was over decades or even centuries so that most people wouldn't notice it outright. Times were hard and life was much more fragile. Feudalism in general is a pretty bad system and gives power to the strongest(though not necessarily smartest) people and then encouraged inbreeding. Vassals were basically slaves and were taught to never aspire to anything above their rank.

That being said, I think I imagine Japan's feudal times were more bearable since people bathed regularly(like daily instead of monthly/yearly), so there were less stinkers running around covered in dirt. Technology for war might not have been as sophisticated but writing, art and philosophy certainly bloomed and I think those are what really makes a culture interesting.

There is one clear difference for me. Feudal Japan is only about Japan while the medieval ages refers to a period involving many nations. I guess feudal Japan had a lot going on but you can't compare one country with a whole period involving many countries.
