I received an invitation to participate in a research study regarding consumer spending behavior. I'm offered $40 cash to do this. What's the drawback? They want to have access to my credit card and bank accounts! Would you do it for $40?
(I can't provide a link to this because it's a membership site. I've actually been registered with the "parent" site since 2001 to do research, but they have no personal information except my name and address. They are legitimate, and I have earned cash rewards in the past.)

Not a chance would I do this! For one thing, you don't know whether they are not going to sell your information on, and secondly, anybody could clear your accounts out, or even use your identity!
It's far too dangerous these days, and $40 is nowhere near enough to be offering anybody (in my humble opinion)

They have a lot of so-called "guarantees" in their invitation, but I don't think any data is truly secure on the internet. In any case, even if it were secure, there is no way I would give my credit card numbers and bank account info to have a company track everything I spend! That's insane.

Hmmm....if you made it $400,000, they could have the keys to my car and house too! However, for $40, I am positively sure I would not give away that type of information. Of course if I were in my college days, I only kept a card with like a $200 limit and never used it... In that case, you bet I would have taken the cash and they could watch my credit card do NOTHING!
