RPGs & Money
Not everyone approves: some games ban the sale of game items, a few encourage it, but most turn a blind eye. But the sale of the "Project Entropia" island, and the popularity of "World of Warcraft", a game launched in November which bans the sale of in-game items, highlight an emerging split, says Edward Castronova, an expert on virtual economies at Indiana University.

WOW that is a lot of monies in RL for a fake Island. I must admit I would never encourage rl monies exchange fro an in game item if I had my own Web based game.
I think it would soon put off a lot of players as they pay a fee to play a game and expect all players to face the same obstacles. It should be the gamers skill that builds the character not his RL wealth. After all the point of a game is to try and match skills to achieve the desired outcome.
Plus what if a person take RL monies and is suppose to give a game item to some one else and does not do it! What game master/web designer would want to deal with that mess.
I think the exchange of in game money for real world money is just ridiculous. These games are played by people under the age of 18, not always but they can be, and expecting them to pay for things using real world money is wrong. Kids don't understand the concepts of money as well as adults do and they could easily spend more than they or their parents could afford without understanding what their doing.
I have played Runescape, an MMORPG, for a year. There are many money sales for gold in runescape. It is crazy how much money one can make from Runescape. There are people with trillions of gold. Then there are people who buy millions of gold for $1 each. It is ridiculous.
Yes I know what your saying. I have a couple million in gold on runescape but I never bought any of it. I think that buying money ion any game is just wrong. I feel it takes a lot of fun out of the game. I do not mind buying/paying for a membership if the game is worth it. BUt Some games I will not buy a membership for due to the prices.
I can understand paying for an intial membership but not for game items too. If you're in that far then its time to pull yourself out before you max out a credit card.
