LOS ANGELES - Television and movie screen writers said Thursday they would go on strike for the first time in nearly 20 years in a dispute over royalties.

Either this is not going to last long or the screen writers guild in the USA is finished. Many film makers are already going to Canada to make movies as it's cheaper due to lack of unions.

Funny note: Anti-Capitalist Michel Moore (who is against outsourcing) has been doing this for years as a cost cutting measure.

A lot of people do not know how serious this is for the movie / television industry. The Movie Writer Guild is 12,000 strong and people like Letterman and other TV show hosts depend on these writers for their jokes! Can you imagine what this means? No jokes unless Letterman can come up with his own.

What a frightening prospect! I've never really found him funny and without writers it will only get worse. On the other hand, there are always scabs.

What they are mainly asking for is a percentage on new media for which they are not currently credited. For instance they do not get anything for internet scripts or downloads. This means that companies make money without having to pay them for their work when it is outside of the regular TV / cinema scenarios. That is unfair, so I am with them.

They have a legitimate grievance, it does seem that the writers are getting screwed out of money. It's good to see that some in the industry support what they are doing, but I think the strike is doomed due to the option of using non-union Canadian writers.
