Jose Medellin
Finally, 15 years after the brutal rape, torture and murder of a 16 year old and a 14 year old girl, Jose Medellin was executed last night in Texas. This despite the finest efforts of the international community, Mexico -- and even Washington -- to let this man live. The Mexican government has now sent a note of protest to the US state department, expressing "its concern for the precedent that (the execution) may create for the rights of Mexican nationals who may be detained in that country." He got his last meal -- so how about laying off the whole 'rights for nationals' thing, ok?

Comments: Actually, Medellin declined his last meal. But I would suggest that there are slightly more important rights than food--the right, for instance, to have your treaty-guaranteed consular access provided.
