Toward 20-Story Earthquake-Safe Buildings Made From Wood. A two-story wooden structure endured four different earthquake simulations on July 14, 2017 on the world's largest outdoor shake table here in San Diego. And it's still standing before more tests in the coming weeks. The goal of the tests is to gather enough data to design wood buildings as tall as 20 stories that do not suffer significant damage during large earthquakes. That is, not only can occupants leave the building unharmed, but they can come back and resume living in the building shortly after a temblor. Source 2r.
While wooden buildings are good at withstanding the shaking of the earth in a earthquake they are normally not more than three or four stories tall. I think anything over four stories will make the wooden structure more prone to collapse than a steel building in an earthquake.
Oh am I with you on this one KN. I don't think I'd want to live in a 20 story tall wooden building in an earthquake zone. Not only would it be more prone to fire it wouldn't 'feel' safe to me no matter what the 'experts' say. Of course, I don't want to live in an earthquake zone at all.
Thus a reason why I live in the great plains. The chances of me experiencing a earth quake is much less. While my building is mostly wood inside it is brick outside thus I have a much better protected building towards most everything but an earthquake. There is some modifications in my house that does make it more sturdy than most though.
Yeah, my house is stone and I'm outside of an earthquake zone, although an earthquake can happen anyplace and has happened at one time or another all over… it's much less prevalent here. Of course, if and when the time come to di di because everything goes to Hell in a hand-basket, I'm heading west… it's the Oxbow in Wyoming for me.
