Ground Fire Injures 4 U.S. Troops In South Sudan

Four U.S. Service members were injured when their aircraft came under ground fire in South Sudan during a mission to evacuate American citizens in Bor, according to a statement issued by U.S. Africa Command.

The helicopters were trying to land at Bor, the rebel-held capital of Jonglei state, and were forced to return to neighbouring Uganda with one of the aircraft hit and leaking fuel. Ref. Source 2
US sends Marines to Uganda to aid South Sudan evacuations:
Pentagon spokesman Col. Steven Warren said a "Platoon-sized" Team of Marines and a C-130 aircraft would be detached from a deployment in Djibouti to travel to Entebbe, Uganda, AFP reported. Ref. Source 4
The United States special envoy to South Sudan says the country's warring factions have agreed to attend peace talks in Ethiopia. South Sudan has been gripped by violence since Dec. 15 when a fight among presidential guards later spiraled into ethnically-based violence across the country. Ref. USAToday
Is the new threat from Troika credible? The Oppositions should not celebrate yet. South Sudanese will forever be grateful to the Americans, particularly the neo-conservatives in the younger Bush regime, for conjuring up their political independence from the Sudan. Source 5w.
Yeah, as I wrote elsewhere, South Sudan is a troubled young nation. Those in power seek to consolidate their hold on power rather than do what is right for the country and establish a truly democratic government where the power lies with the people and their votes. After seeing this happen again and again around the world it makes me feel even more gratitude to our first president, who voluntarily gave up power and established the precedent that led to what we in the US have today… the peaceful transfer of power. I hope one day someone comes into power in South Sudan and establishes the same thing so the long suffering population can be finally concentrate on bettering their economic condition for themselves and their kids.
