Rwanda Holds Presidential Election Amid Crackdown on Opposition Candidates
In the central African nation of Rwanda, voting is underway in the second presidential election since the genocide of 1994. Incumbent president Paul Kagame is widely expected to win, but the election comes amid a wave of attacks on political opponents. Human rights groups have accused the Kagame government of cracking down on any dissent before the vote, while the government-appointed media council has clamped down on independent newspapers publishing critical views. The NY Post is reporting that the Rwandan President is spending $16,000 a night while he's here. That's 14 times more than the average person makes in Rwanda per year. Rwandan president Paul Kagame could rule until 2034 after voters lift limits:
More than 98% from 21 out of 30 districts, representing 70% of registered voters, voted to lift term limits for Kagame, Mbanda Kalisa said on Friday. Kagame's supporters celebrated the announcement in the capital, Kigali. Ref. Source 1h
