Indonesia Under High Risk of Terror Attack

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The U.S. Embassy in Indonesia warned Americans on Thursday of a high risk of terrorist attacks in the country over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Earlier Indonesian authorities warned that terrorists may be planning to kidnap foreigners in the days ahead.

He was poisoned to death aboard a flight to Holland in September 2004. An off-duty pilot was found guilty for his death, but prosecutors ignored the findings of an independent investigation that pointed to the involvement of Indonesia's State Intelligence Agency. Living for over three years in Indonesia, I got the sensation that the risk of terroristic attacks in this country is highly overrated. It happened in the past and it could happen again in the future but coming to Indonesia for holydays is not more risky than going to London, Madrid or New York (past targets, just like Bali). The local government is seriously active in the war against terrorism and, even more important, fundamentalism is rejected by the population that, on the contrary, is eager to strengthen the relationship with the western world. Since americans are likely to become a target in muslim countries, I don't blame the US government for often alerting his citizens. But if any of you has a friend that has ever been here, he will probably talk about a positive experience.

Reports: Virgin Blue passenger plane in suspected hijack

A report from Reuters, citing Indonesia's Metro TV, says a Virgin Blue passenger plane has been hijacked and forced to land at Indonesia's Bali airport. However, the Associated Press, citing an Indonesian Air Force spokesman, says the plane, which departed from Australia, is believed to have been hijacked while it was at Bali airport.
