Comments: Do children with autism have more fears about things than other children? My child is afraid about the oddest of things and she is already a teenager.

Mandy, yes they not only have more fears but also unusual ones. As they get older they are able to control it somehow but keep in mind their brains are wired differently so what they see, hear or perceive that may seem to us as silly it's completely different to them.

Odd Fears In Autism Health & Special Psychology

My son in recent days have developed a "fears". Now let me explain these "fears" come during the night for some reason. He is afraid of the dark, he is afraid of things he read on a book that are really nothing to be afraid of, he is afraid of certain words being used and even he is afraid of certain letters in my cel phone. Tonight, he started crying out of the blue because he does not want mommy and daddy to die because he will be alone and send to live with another family. I tried to explain him we are not going to die anytime soon but he answers saying we will die when we are 60 something and maybe younger than that and he doesn't know what he will do.

Any suggestions on how to deal with these fears?

Comments: My kid doesn't have autism (but Down Syndrome) but a good friend of mine who lives in Canada has a son with autism and she told me in the past about irrational fears autistic children go through because they're emotionally immature. Just try to support your son and love him.

Thanks, I found out its called "separation anxiety". Not easy to handle when the child is 8 years old.

Would educating them about what darkness is and that you are protecting them help. Maybe helping them pretend they are in a cinema where it is dark but a fun place to be.

It can help in some instances but it won't help much in irrational fears such as fear of a particular phrase or word. The best you can do according to doctors is to take those fears seriously and no try to put it down, brush it off or make fun of the child because it affects them tremendously since the reason for these fears itself is emotional immaturity.

Odd Fears Autism Psychology Special & Health

Usually when someone has a fear of something it is advised that they face it and become accustomed to it so that it no longer becomes a fear. Would the same method work here?
