This makes perfect sense to me. If you dwell on the negative feelings I can see where it would not only last longer but by dwelling on it one would be more apt to have more of the negative feelings.

This reminds me of reverse psychology. Rather than make friction and cause resistance just go with the flow and change direction instead.
