Niklaus says, "We fared little better. We managed to save two Athenian soldiers, and slew many of the creatures. But the Athenians refuse to assist Thebans. So other than a few bits of scrap we have nothing to show for our efforts. Save some satisfaction at having tried to do the right thing." He pauses, then adds, "And the first verse of our tale, I suppose." He looks at Arcad and notes the blood on his fur. "Fear not, big one. Your valor will be included."
"We made a decision based on what we knew at the time. That is all the gods can expect of mere mortals. At the very least, we now know more than we did before, that can shape our decisions in the future."
"It should also be noted that we may have saved no one had we gone for the prisoners first. Without knowing to prevent the attempt, it seems they could have disappeared just as easily had we done so."
"Can you point me to the exact point they disappeared? I may be able to determine more, if given a few minutes to work."
On reaching that spot, Elymas pulls out his book and a few trinkets, then begins a ritual. It is his hope that there is some trace of magic for him to read here.
Out of Character: Detect Magic as a ritual.

Brathark asks Photokles and Tellias to head back to the wagon and bring it up while we figure out our next move. He makes sure to bring Briadia her mule so she is ready to ride with us again once we are gathered together again.
Looking at Briadia he asks, "You no longer sense any of those creatures around Thebes at all or just less of them?"
Photokles is a little intrigued by Briadia's remark at being able to "Sense" other beings around her, even if she cannot necessarily see them.
"You have sight beyond sight?" the priest clumsily remarks. "That must be a gift of Helios, for he is the all seeing, the one who can pierce the darkest of darks and undo that which is hidden!"
The priest, regains his composure a bit as Brathark requests the retrieval of the wagon. As he heads off to do so, Photokles looks back at Briadia for moment, studying her. [Interesting] the Rhodian thinks, [I will need to converse with her further on this when the time presents itself… ]
He then kicks his mule and heads off to fetch the wagon.
Elymas thinks long and hard, reaching back on all his studies, but all he can come up with is philosophically this is impossible. He detects no trace of magic.
Briadia senses less than a hundred creatures left outside Thebes. Then less than fifty. Then she can't sense any. The revolting wrongness of them is gone.
Elymas' shoulders slump in defeat after a time. "There is nothing here, not even a trace of magic. I had hoped to study it, at least find out where the passage led. It seems these creatures can appear anywhere, or at least almost anywhere, and leave without possibility of being followed. We must find another way to engage them."
