Top Excuses For Being Late For Work
What are some of the reasons you have heard for being late for work that are just a bit hard to swallow? If you are an employer how do you handle continuous tardiness?
I am the availability leader for my department which means I put out the weekly schedules and also take phone calls from people who are calling in sick. Needless to say I have heard a lot of excuses, and witnessed a lot of acting over the phone. The best though was when someone called and boldly stated that he was too drunk to come in to work. I was speechless because usually there is some sugar-coated excuse, but this time, the guy was as frank as could be. I had to give him credit for saying it as it was.
A second-place excuse was one where the person was driving in to work late and called to say she was going to be late. While talking to me, she got pulled over by a cop for driving recklessly. Needless to say her tardiness had just gotten increased by about 20 minutes or so.

The funniest call in was that he was calling in sick, of it. Yes, that was a real call. He got written up for it. Right now, I am the one in charge at work since my boss is in the hospital. I have already had someone call in for the entire shift with a chemical imbalance. He said the doctor told him he is out till the tenth. How convenient, I told him to bring in a doctors note!
When I was working through college, I was a assistant manager at a pizza restaraunt and had lots of employees. These were some of my favorite call-offs:
*Dude, I am still trippin (dropped some LSD on Friday night and this was Sunday morning). There is no way I can work today. (ahhh...such refreshing honesty)
*I have a date I need to get ready for, so I won't be working today.
*I don't have a ride into work. (Ummm, but you live 2 blocks away.) Yeah, but it is supposed to rain tonight. (I will drive you back home.) That's OK...I don't want to bother you. (like not showing up to work is such a relief for me)
*I am having female problems today, so I wont be in. (what can a guy say to this one?)
*Got something going on tonight and quit. Next week, I will go apply at Pizza Hut. Hey, can I keep the hat? (why sure...you have been a model employee. Keep the cap as our parting gift)
*I don't feel like cutting onions today. They make my hands stink.
If you think the employees were bad, there are some great customer stories from that place. I am not the person you want standing in front of the counter as I can actually say the customer is wrong and have on several occassions.

Comments: I don't know what the top excuses truly are but I'm guessing that its about being sick. The lamest one I ever heard was when a woman called in to say her cat was depressed and she needed to take her out for awhile. I thought cats could get out on their own?
Top excuse for being late to work is the weather in my opinion. Very much true during winter storms where there isn't a shut down of the transportation system so bosses still expect you to show up.

Unless there is a natural catastrophe there should be no excuses for being late to work. Being late often is a sign of disrespect for your job and employer - look for another job.

I always try to leave early and give myself plenty of time to get to work. I do know that with traffic sometimes all it takes is one person to something wrong and you are then stuck behind a long line of stopped traffic. I know many different ways to work just in case I have to take a alternate route. I do not make excuses for being late to work.
