Those Russians are always looking to cause some trouble. The Chinese also do this. They have their own satellites in space that literally follow ours and can disrupt them at anytime. If a real world war took place we will have to go back to the days of using a HAM radio for global communication.

I saw that documentary about the spy satellites that circle around ours. They have built in arms and act like transformers to physically rip apart other satellites. I really hope we have something in place for this.

Could there be an alternative technology that is not reliant on satellites? Fiber optic cables can run deep in the ocean and on land. Then small units, many of them can be sent up rather one big satellite.

Fiber optics will work for ground information but not global positioning. Satellites can't be too small because they need their solar panels and other equipment to stay up there.
