An Accidental Shield

In a surprising twist, scientists at NASA have discovered that mankind appears to have accidentally influenced the planet in a positive manner.

High power very low frequency radio waves are used to communicate with things well below the earth, or below the sea. As powerful as they are, their impact extends outward as well, saturating the lower atmosphere.

Interestingly, this bubble of VLF radiation appears to have pushed the Van Allen belts, a layer of charged particles harmful to both living things and machines, notably further away from Earth. It follows then, though it is unconfirmed, that this bubble should also help protect us from harmful solar flares, and would be a potential explanation for why some of them in recent years have had less impact than predicted.

I have thought about this and I can see this being a benefit to us in shielding our planet form some harmful things. The one thing I would like to know is if this shield could help us some from a gamma radiation burst. If that is the case then we are more protected than previously thought.

If I understand it correctly, the answer is yes and no, but mostly no. The VLF radio field isn't blocking radiation, it is deflecting charged particles which emit radiation.

Now that's certainly not nothing, especially since it might give us a way to control a cloud of radioactive particles in the event of a disaster. Which would be particularly helpful with Alpha and Beta radiation sources, which are ultimately much more deadly than Gamma, but have a much shorter effective range.
