We shall discuss the Wizard class in the Dungeons & Dragons 5e role-playing game. What are the benefits of playing the character class of Wizard? Does playing a Wizard have a down side? How should one properly play the Wizard class?
The Wizard is a master of versatility. A well played Wizard is the type to always have the perfect tool on hand for the situation.
It has often been said that a Dungeons & Dragons Wizard should be played like a Greek God. Pick your champion, let them stay in the spotlight, and start "Cheating" your arse off keeping the odds in favor of said champion. A well placed fog spell keeping those archers from striking true, paralyze the one guy long enough to deal with his minions, provide a flanking buddy for your fighter, etc. The right spells can change the flow of combat considerably without ever directly harming one's opponents.

A wizard's best role is as a background supporter. With one subset exception, Wizard's are best to stay well back of melee and throw their spells as needed to support the tanking players. A well-played Magic Missile, Fire Bolt, Summons, etc. In the heat of melee will defeat the bad guys handily. If in Melee, the Wizard is taken down fairly swiftly, not having the serious protection that other classes can bring. A down side to the Wizard class is the many concentration spells that exist. With the restriction of concentration, many of their spells lock them into a single maintenance cycle, prevent protection or crowd control of more than one ally or a few enemies.
