In older versions Dungeons & Dragons had a Magic-user as a class that uses magic. In Dungeons & Dragons 5e the Magic-user is split up to form mages, warlocks, sorcerers, and wizards but what are the differences between each?
From a lore perspective, Wizards earn their magic through hard work and study, Sorcerers use magic inherent to who they are, usually a bloodline connection to magical beings. Warlocks draw their power from an external source. Most Warlocks bargain for their magic as part of a pact, but others find a way to draw it from a patron without said patron's consent.
