17 HELD IN AUSTRALIA TERROR SWOOP
Australian prosecutors began outlining what they say were planned attacks against citizens after police arrested 17 people on terrorism charges in the nation's two largest cities.

I do not know all the details of the case, but I applaud the work of the Australian police and wish that such actions were done in my own country. As the Australian police chief said... they were not waiting to see when and where the bomb would go off in order to take action.

PURCHASE OF CHEMICALS KEY TO AUSTRALIAN RAIDS
It is by far the biggest counter-terrorism investigation mounted in Australia, involving 850 personnel from intelligence agencies and police forces across three jurisdictions.

I reported on the Green Valley arrest, which was the only serious arrest made.
The guy that got arrested on that occasion allegedly shot a police first, but it is still cloudy what exactly happened.
Let me give you guys a better understanding of these events.
Investigations had been going on for 18 months on these "suspected terrorists".
The timing of the arrests amazingly coincided with the most radical industrial relations reforms made in the past 100 years in Australia. In fact our Prime minister John Howard warned the Australian public we were being targeted by terrorists on the same day his party tabled the most controversial and unpopular reforms he has ever made.
Strange coincidence? I don't think so. This whole investigation was politically timed to suit the governing party, which has a majority rule in both the lower and upper houses. IR reforms, which will truly affect the people, have escaped the front pages and are now being rushed through Parliament. This is a political scam of the most vile consequences.
Controversial terrorism laws that will greatly erode human rights in Australia have also been rushed through the Parliament like a hot potato.
Australia is a paranoid nation that hangs accused Muslims without having their day in court.
This past week has seen the Aussie way of life truly destroyed by an ideological Christian Right element called John Howard's Liberal Party.

That is a new perspective I would not have known had it not been for that insight, but are you then saying that the suspects were not really planning anything, or is it just that they (police) were timing their arrests to suit the bill being passed?

I think the timing came from above, not the police.
We don't know any details about these suspected terrorists. We know their names, where they were arrested and what they have been accused of. Unfortunately a lot of our politicians have taken the opportunity to grandstand on these arrests, which quite frankly is a contempt of court.
I am 100 per cent in support of the police taking measures to protect our national security. But when it is done under the smog of political gain, question marks will appear.
There is no doubt this was a legitimate investigation into what the authorities believe is a terrorist threat, despite a ridiculous amount of resources beating up the investigation. When I was reporting on the Green Valley shooting there were over 50 police officers from several local area commands at the scene. I counted about 10 officers actually doing anything, the rest of them were standing around socialising with the media and pretending to be important.
Until these suspects go before our courts we will never know how substantial these claims are.
If they are convincted I believe we should treat them accordingly. But right now the majority of them are being treated like the worst serial murderers, locked up in solitary confinement in Super Max, our most secure prison.
I believe in innocent until proven guilty. Everyone ought to have their day in court.

AUSTRALIAN TERRORISM SUSPECTS LINKED TO NUCLEAR PLANT
Three suspects who were detained in a recent Australian counter-terrorism sweep had been seen a year earlier near the country's only nuclear plant, police say.
