Double disinfection treatment for safer drinking water. In spite of good progress in water hygiene during the recent decades, contaminated water still causes millions of diseases every year. Most of these diseases are caused by enteric viruses, and better water disinfection methods could help prevent discomfort and even save lives. A new study shows that a combined disinfection treatment with chlorine and UV radiation can be highly effective in water disinfection. Source 6c.
I’ve heard that the issue with straws and filters is that you have to train the people to use them all the time. That may be biased though, as the article was pushing a powder that binds to particulates in the water and causes them all to settle. Then, you leave the water out for ultraviolet exposure to kill the bacteria. Seems like all methods would have trouble with the training element.
Using bacteria to create a water filter that kills bacteria. Engineers have created a bacteria-filtering membrane using graphene oxide and bacterial nanocellulose. It's highly efficient, long-lasting and environmentally friendly -- and could provide clean water for those in need. Source 4o.
