How high your credit score needs to be will vary with each lender. However, most experts will tell you that a credit score of 720 or higher will give you the best chance of being approved. While you may be able to qualify with a lower score you will most likely have to jump through more hoops, so to speak. You may need a larger down payment and probably will end up paying more points.
