England has pretty strong natural defenses against amphibious assault. Very few good landing sites.
If I recall correctly, Hitler specified that naval and air superiority must be established in both the English Channel and at a landing site before a land invasion would be considered. But Germany never quite managed to achieve these things, so it never happened.
They did come close on several occasions.
