I agree with this thinking 100%. I do not believe in giving things to my children every time they ask. When they want something beyond the norm then I give them jobs to do that takes some thinking so they can understand the value of what they are asking.

I also agree with this article. Giving kids what they want is destroying their ability to make smart decisions. They learn that whatever their immediate needs and feelings are is what they should do, but if history has taught us anything, it should be that human nature is not the best guide.

The best way to raise kids is to respect their personhood by explaining why you are behaving the way you are and why they should behave the way you want them to. It teaches them to think critically and asses the consequences of their actions before they act.

I also agree with the article about explaining how advertising will mislead you and how to critically evaluate it to see if it makes sense and what is the best way to process the information, both in the store and on TV.

One of the biggest epidemics in America right now is that people believe everything they hear and see, on the internet, tv, and in stores. This has lead to obesity being such a big problem, it has lead the election of Trump, and it will cause us even more problems in the future. We have to learn to critically evaluate what information is out there and whether to trust that information and how to act on it.

I believe it is the parents' duty to teach this to their kids. Kids should have the ideas reinforced at school, but it is the parents' duty to teach it and practice it with their kids at home.

Oh yes this is excellent. Children get way more than they should. An occasional gift is good at the right time but anything outside of that should be worked for in some way even if its just chores around the home. They should never get everything they want simply because they ask for it.
