I have raised cats all my life. I have never gotten any of my cats de-clawed. I like my cats and they have been trained to leave the furniture alone. I usually have a natural log and a few scratching posts available for them to scratch on. My current three cats are very content with their lives.

I think this article is wrote buy a bleeding heart who knows little of pets and the damage they can do if an indoor only pet. If your cat is going outside different ball games claws are required. I had one cat that no matter what I did it would not leave one chair I had alone it was ruined but I kept it for a scratching post for it. We de-clawed and neutered our present cat and I will not let him out unless leashed. Guess what he can still use the litter since he is not required to dig through hard dirt.

It was a rescued cat from human society and the de-clawing and neutering was recommended from the vet as he was 7 weeks old (had not sprayed yet or I would not have taken him).

I suppose castration for males and fixing females is cruel also, till you house stinks like spray or you are over run buy kittens.

fyi He is one happy pussy cat especially now that the children are back from holidays.

All of my cats are indoor only cats. If you take your time and train your cat you can get them to leave your furniture alone. It takes some patience but it can be done. All three of my cats have all their claws and my furniture has not been damaged because of them. You will always have the occasional cat hanging on the back of the chair or cough as they play but it is not something that is a regular thing and it occurs during play.

I do believe in spay/neutering cats so that the world or your home is not over run by kittens or spray.

To be honest I hate cats indoors but in the city it would be cruel to let them out and become tire warmers.
