A Sydney girls' school is redefining the concept of cheating by allowing students to "phone a friend" and use the internet and I-Pods during exams.

Is not the idea of a test to see if you have learned the material that was presented? This sound like a test of how well you can research a topic. Lets save that for oh say a science project!

I can understand long winded formulas allowing a sheet to have them wrote down on as they can be hard to memorize (Although I managed well enough.). Then you are at least still testing the students ability to apply them correctly and show they understand the topic.

It is thoughts like this that allowed calculators and mandated computer printed projects to be handed in by grade 5 students who really should be polish their hand writing and committing to memory the times tables not depending on a calculator. How many time have you been handed grossly the incorrect amount of changes at a store because your server can not compute basic math questions in their head, and have no idea on the concept of magnitude in numbers.

I would call this cheating. But if it is not ruled as cheating it is just another example of how our kids are getting things just handed to them and then we wonder why they can not handle failing at something. Especially when there is no way they can cheat at it.
