Movies that achieve a G rating are falling out of favor because adults don't want to see it. If you design a movie that is appropriate for a general (G) audience, then your main drawing factor is for kids. Real life is never appropriate for a G rating. People want to see things that are more real and less 'fairy tail' or cleaned up. Life is full of 'rude humor' 'intense action sequences' and 'mild thematic elements.' People don't want a movie that has no struggle and you can't have struggle without some threat of harm to the main character.

I personally don't think that things should be so naive. Kids are going to be going into the real world, they need to know it is not a nice place and that there are real dangers. So give every movie a parental guidance (PG) suggested rating and let parents decide which dangers their kids are ready to know about and which are too 'adult' for them. And even if there is 'raunchy' humor or double entendres, most kids won't get it anyways. There is literally no harm to the kid what-so-ever. The kids laughs a little at the face value of the joke or the common meaning and moves on, forgetting about it entirely. Unless adults make a big deal out it, kids don't even know it exists, until they are old enough that they should be aware of this kind of stuff anyways.

I don't understand why parents want to shield their kids so much. These things exist in the world. You need to prepare your kids to deal with it. Just because you don't want your kid behaving this way or saying these things, doesn't mean that other kids won't be doing it. Unless you address it and explain that those behaviors are unacceptable (Which means exposing the kids to what those behaviors are), they won't know that it is bad and might start imitating their friends just to be cool.

Depends on the age of the children. Some children are very inquisitive and will ask, "Granny, what do they mean?" or even repeat the same things they hear thinking it is something that should be repeated to their friends. Even G rated movies have to be looked over to ensure they are what you want your children to lean because at that age movies is not just entertainment but teaching.

Gun violence in PG-13 movies continues to climb past R-rated films

The amount of gun violence in top-grossing PG-13 movies has continued to exceed the gun violence in the biggest box-office R-rated films, an analysis shows. What increasingly differentiates the gun violence in PG-13 movies from those rated are is not just frequency but these films' 'erasure of the consequences' such as blood and suffering and the involvement of comic book-inspired heroes and antiheroes. Parents say intense gun violence in PG-13 movies appropriate for teens 15 and older. Parents are more willing to let their children see PG-13 movies with intense gun violence when the violence appears to be 'justified' than when it has no socially redeeming purpose, a study finds. But even when the violence in PG-13 movies appears justified, parents think it is more appropriate for teens at least 15 years old, two years older than the PG-13 rating suggests. Source 8h.
