Elect Or Appoint Judges?

What are some of the pros and cons between electing judges or appointing judges over any court of law?

I believe there are pros and cons to each but I feel that judges should be elected because they have to judge the law based on the people's interpretation and not their personal interpretation. We see plenty of examples of judges making a ruling based on their own religious background or morals rather than a neutral stand based on the law they are using to make a judgement.
