Recycling plastic is something that we need to do better of all over the US and the world. The amount of plastic that is making its way into landfills or out into the oceans is not good for the environment at all. We can and should do much better and this new method may help that a lot.
Bio-renewable process could help ‘green’ plastic. Plastics are often derived from petroleum, contributing to reliance on fossil fuels and driving harmful greenhouse gas emissions. To change that, scientists are trying to take the pliable nature of plastic in another direction, developing new and renewable ways of creating plastics from biomass. Source 7g.
Millions of tons of plastic waste could be turned into clean fuels, other products. A new chemical conversion process could transform the world's polyolefin waste, a form of plastic, into useful products, such as clean fuels and other items. The conversion process incorporates selective extraction and hydrothermal liquefaction. Once the plastic is converted into naphtha, it can be used as a feedstock for other chemicals or further separated into specialty solvents or other products. Source 6v.
