Yes I believe recess is important for young minds as it allows them to use that pent up energy they have from sitting in school learning stuff. To be able to get outside and socialize with peers and have fun is always important as it helps them become more social beings.
I absolutely believe that the playground still matters today even though we've got all of this nice new technology, there is still something to be said for actually going outside and playing and having a fun time with all of your friends. It not only gives kids an opportunity to breathe some fresh air, but also to run around and get rid of pent up energy just as KNdoran has rightly said. I can remember as a small boy absolutely loving recess and looking forward to it all day long. It was always my favorite time of the day.
