Many people feel that dogs are stupid. Granted there are some that act that way a lot but most dogs are more intelligent than people give them credit for. They know who they are and they know their smells. Wash a dog and watch them go a bit batty trying to get their smell back.

Yes dogs are very self aware. They know exactly what is going on. They can tell if something is wrong. Like if there owner gets sick they automatically will miss them.
