Earthdawn is another old school game, and has a lot in common with Dungeons & Dragons. There are differences, of course. Most notably in the world building. While Dungeons & Dragons is designed to be used in a variety of fantasy setting, Earthdawn is world specific. The history of the setting is integral to the world. Once, long ago, the world was fresh, clean and beautiful. Magic was real force in the world, and its power was growing slowly and steadily.
And that was the problem. As the ambient magic of the world grew, it became more hospitable to creatures from beyond space. These Horrors came through the Astral plane into the real world, and created the Scourge. The races of of the world knew it was coming, forewarned by one of their great sages. They had time to prepare, to build fortifications, to protect themselves. Sometimes the defenses worked. Those lucky ones hunkered down for decades, even centuries while the magic ebbed. Eventually they emerged into a world horribly scarred. Some of the Horrors still stalk the world, but most are gone, unable to survive the ebbing flow of magic. Some remained, hunting survivors.
This is the world of Earthdawn.
I love the world. The story of it resonates with me. There are so few post-apocalyptic fantasies out there. The system and I don't get along. There are too many layers between stats and dice for my taste. Still, its worth a look if you like fantasies.
