Introduction Quasar
If we all agree on everything, this site would be a total bore. It is good that we have discussion and disagreement. I am suspecting that is why we are here. It is just in how you handle the disagreements.
I liked that he would say his peace, even if I thought it was grossly incorrect. Some points I agreed in principle with him, but his technique for trying to convey his opinion was harsh to say the least and masked the content of his reply, which is why it was difficult to support him at times. Basically, you could agree with about 90% with what he said on something, but it was lost of the fact that he was a total jerk as he made is point. However, I did appreciate that he wouldn't hold back his opinions even if misguided, because there are many out there that have thoughts such as his.
Interestingly enough, the charm points seem to be pretty important to him. I can see why, since he was looking for acceptance the majority of the time, so a negative did have some effect. Honestly, we should want people like him in the group for discussion, they are fun and thought provoking (even if they drive you crazy), but we all need to help make sure that they conform to basic rules of discussion and disagreement.
JB has a difficult job and has to be somewhat inflexible. His entire day would be taken up if he had to deal with the hurt feelings as a result of a handfull of disrespectful members. If the site has no rules you get anarchy, a lot of hurt feelings, endless personal complaints, bad word of mouth and people leaving. If I were in his shoes, I might try to see if there was a different way to have handled him, but if not...I would hold no regrets. However, I think that we as a group may have been enablers to some degree for his continued lack of respect for others opinions. I tried to approach it on at least one occasion, but did too subtly as to where he probably took my comment as a positive... I definitely needed to be basically as blunt as he was with the other person. In the future, perhaps we as a group might well served to be a little more aggressive at self-governing and maybe we can keep a few Quasars around or maybe he just wasn't going to be told how to do anything (even contributing to this site) by anyone. Who knows.
I know...many of you said things to him. I have looked at the backlog. I am just saying that maybe we could have sent a stronger message and I for one am not going to be nearly as afraid of the "negative" button for posts that insult the other member and probably will be more willing to directly call them out. Because, in the end, this was somewhat of a contest between he and
JB and if this is a community, it shouldnt really be that way.
My 2cents...
