Easter Island is one of the most isolated places on Earth, but on the islands can be found some mysterious objects that have baffled scientists and theorists alike. What is your theory:
There has been much controversy and confusion concerning the origins of the Easter Islanders. Thor Heyerdahl proposed that the people who built the statues were of Peruvian descent, due to a similarity between Rapa Nui and Incan stonework. Some have suggested that Easter Island is the remnant of a lost continent, or the result of an extra-terrestrial influence.

Mysteries Of Easter Island (Hover)
I doubt the alien theory, and since we cannot judge what may have existed on the island before (forest, larger land surface, etc) this might have been a thriving place capable of producing a people that engineered what we now deem as a mystery.
I think that the easter island statues where put the either by, or through descendants of Atlantis. There is evidence that something like Atlantis used to exist. I doubt it was like our legends in which they had technology further advanced than us. But maybe they had the ability to make and place these statues like they are. They probably are some sort of religious meaning there to.
What about elephants?.This is one of the theories and the one that makes more sense. I think each one of those statues have a religious meaning. I am not sure about the extra-terrestial force because if it was, what would be the purpose of beings more intelligent than us putting stone statues on an island?.
What really happened on Easter Island?
Hundreds of iconic moai statues stand testament to the vibrant civilization that once inhabited Easter Island, but there are far fewer clues about why this civilization mysteriously vanished. Did they shortsightedly exhaust the island's resources? Were they decimated by European illnesses and slave trade? Such theories have spread widely, but recent evidence shows that the truth is not as simple as any one of these alone. Ref. Source 2x.
Easter Island not victim of 'ecocide,' analysis of remains shows. Analysis of remains found on Rapa Nui, Chile (Easter Island) provides evidence contrary to the widely-held belief that the ancient civilization recklessly destroyed its environment. Source 6x.
