Two Decades After His Rejection from Federal Bench for Racial Bias, Sen. Jeff Sessions Leads GOP Opposition to Sotomayor

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, is leading the charge against Sotomayor becoming the nation's first Latina Supreme Court justice. Twenty-three years ago, the Senate rejected Sessions' confirmation to the federal bench, in part because he called the NAACP and the ACLU "Un-American" and "Communist-inspired." Ref. Source 5

Sessions Jeff

I don't know whether Mr. Sessions is racist or not. But no matter what his past, he is right in opposing Ms. Sotomayor's nomination.

I can believe that he has some racial bias but I am believing also that she should not be on the Supreme Court bench.

Jeff Sessions' Nomination as Attorney General Alarms Civil Libertarians:

He's an advocate for surveillance and an enemy of encryption; an opponent of criminal justice reform; and a hardliner on immigration. Ref. Source 8b.

Did you see the protestors that were interrupting Sessions when he started to give his statement after introducing his family? Do those protestors get paid by the opposition knowing that they will be arrested? This was well planned because one protestor would get up and start shouting then when the police took them out another would start shouting. It did throw Sessions off a bit.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions met twice last year with the top Russian diplomat in Washington whose interactions with former Trump national security adviser Mike Flynn led to Flynn's firing, according to the Justice Department.

Sessions did not mention either meeting during his confirmation hearings when he said he knew of no contacts between Trump surrogates and Russians. A Justice official said Sessions didn't mislead senators during his confirmation.

Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador, is considered by US intelligence to be one of Russia's top spies and spy-recruiters in Washington, according to current and former senior US government officials.

Sessions met with Kislyak twice, in July on the sidelines of the Republican convention, and in September in his office when Sessions was a member of the Senate Armed Services committee. Sessions was an early Trump backer and regular surrogate for him as a candidate. Ref. CNN.

When it comes to the Trump administration there is always some Russian connection involved. Sessions said he had no involvement with the Russians during the campaign, he even went as far as saying he did not talk to any Russians and yet met with the ambassador. He is being called on to recluse himself and he ought to. One cabinet member resigned over this Russian connection it might happen to Sessions as well.
