The deputy who responded to the Thousand Oaks mass shooting at Borderline Bar was killed by friendly fire, sheriff says. Six bullets struck Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus at the Borderline Bar & Grill on Nov. 7 and one came from a California Highway Patrol officer's rifle. Sheriff Bill Ayub said Friday the friendly fire killed Helus.
