Patches containing the prescription painkiller fentanyl were recalled Tuesday, because of a flaw that could cause patients or caregivers to overdose on the potent drug inside.

Fentanyl has overtaken heroin as the deadliest drug in America, federal officials say. The synthetic opioid was responsible for over 18,000 overdose death in 2016, the most recent year for which statistics were available. For the previous four years (2012 to 2015), heroin topped the list, according to the report prepared by the Centers for Disease Control. Overdose deaths from Fentanyl increased by an average of 113 percent per year from 2013 to 2016, the report said. Ref. USAToday.
