Michigan Democrat John Dingell announced Monday he will retire at the end of this year. Dingell, first elected in 1955, became the longest-serving Member of Congress in history last year, and has played key roles in major pieces of legislation ranging from Medicare to the Clean Air Act. Former Rep. John Dingell, the longest serving member of Congress on record and a politician whose voice loomed large even after he left Capitol Hill, passed away Thursday. He was 92.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John David Dingell, Jr., former Michigan Congressman and longest-serving member of the United States Congress," the office of his wife, Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell, said in a statement. Ref. CNN.
