Latter-day Saint missionaries can now call and text home weekly on preparation day, the church's First Presidency has announced. Missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can now call, text or video chat weekly, the First Presidency announced Friday. Source 3n.

I find it's always good for missionaries to at least have some sort of communication with their families since they'll be out for a long while. It keeps them more focused and determined for their goal and mentally prepares them for the next weeks ahead.
