Hurricane Gustav

Hurricane Gustav

Three years ago today, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast. Residents are now preparing for another potentially massive hurricane, as Gustav barrels toward the U.S. mainland with winds up to 75 miles per hour. The storm has already claimed 75 lives as it ripped through the Caribbean. Is New Orleans ready for Hurricane Gustav?

Gustav is now a category 4 storm, and unlike the last time with Katrina the US government is making major evacuations days before it is expected to hit (this Monday or Tuesday).

Hurricane Gustav

Hurricane Gustav makes landfall near Cocodrie, Louisiana and from what I see on CNN the water is already topping the levies, but the Army Core of Engineers are saying there are no major problems, so I guess we will see.

Hurricane Gustav

Gustav is weakening, and didn't become the monster storm predicted. Of course, it's still been a Cat2 hurricane, so there will be damage and destruction.

QUOTE
Kines confirmed earlier reports that Gustav was moving northwest from the coast of Louisiana at about 16 miles per hour. Earlier in the day, the storm had exhibited winds of 115 miles per hour, which was already below the 130 miles-per-hour winds of a typical Category 3 storm and nowhere near the 156 miles-per-hour winds of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. "Hurricanes thrive on warm water so once they move past the the Gulf, to go over land, they no longer have that fuel that warm water supplies, so they will weaken," said Kines. "It has already reached its peak."

"Observations from an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that Gustav is not strengthening," the National Hurricane Center had said earlier Monday morning.
